My greyhound poops frequently and has itchy skin. Is it food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Male | neutered | 5 years and 11 months old | 76 lbs

My greyhound, Gary, has been pooping about 5 times a day the last few days. His poops are normal in color and consistency, it's just the frequency I'm worried about. He has been having itchy skin the few months too, so I'm wondering if it is a food issue? He is on kirkland Natures Domain from costco, that is grain free. He's been on this diet for almost a year now if I remember correctly, so I'm not sure why problems would be coming up now.

That does seem odd. It may be a new normal, or it could be caused by increased motilitiy of the GI tract, IBD, increased food consumption, or something else. Common causes of itching in dogs includes fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. Make sure Gary is on a good monthly flea preventative. Food allergies are possible even if he has been on the same food. Your vet may recommend a food trial to see if that could help with the stool volume and itching. If you dislike the volume of stools, you could also discuss a low residue or low fiber dog food.
