My pregnant Labrador is shedding excessively. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 7 months old | 81 lbs

I have a 2 1/2 yr old Chocolate Lab who is approx 7 weeks pregnant ( her first litter ). She has been shedding a lot more than usual. She does not have any bald spots and besides a little dandruff when you scratch her back, she appears to be fine. Is the excessive hair loss normal?

Excessive hair loss can be normal during pregnancy or while nursing, occur during times of stress, or be due to illness. If there are no lesions and your girl otherwise feels well it can be pregnancy related. I hope this helps and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
