Dog gulping, lip licking, and dark stool: When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 1 year and 2 months old | 14 lbs

My 1 year old just recently started gulping and excessively licking her lips, mostly at night and once in awhile during the day. Her stool is pretty dark, and had just a tad of diarrhea once. This just started a couple days ago. It’s not constant but she’s never done it before. Should I be worried???

I am sorry to hear about Eclaire (adorable name!). It is possible this could be a result of nausea. Since she has also had changes to her stool, I would consider having a veterinarian examine her. Dark tarry colored stools can be a sign of blood in the digestive tract and we want to be sure that she doesn't have an ulcer or something else causing these symptoms. I would bring a stool sample to the vet with you for them to examine. Best of luck to you and Eclaire.
