My dog has recurring ear hematomas. Should I use massage or heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | 10 years and 10 months old

Our 11 year old American bulldog has just gotten his 2nd aural hematoma in 8 months. The first was caused by excessive head shaking caused by water in the ear during water treadmill rehab. This one was due to a random head shake near the coffee table. Our vet did a thorough ear check and ruled out any underlying ear issues, and then aspirated/injected/wrapped the ear. I have heard that massage and heat application can help keep the pinna pliable and minimize deformity..is this true?

I would be cautious about heat or massage in the initial 2-3weeks as they are likely to encourage the pocket to refill and may encourage recurrence. Once resolved, it may help reduce scarring but the scarring itself although unsightly is generally not painful and helps prevent recurrence
