Why is my senior cat losing weight, vomiting, and hurting when petted?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Burmese | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 8 lbs

My cat is ten years old, has recently lost a lot of weight. Before I switched his food he was vomiting twice a day. He is eating but is skinny and acts like it hurts for me to pet him. What could be wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Tully Mars to a vet for blood work. He could be diabetic or have thyroid disease. Both of these illnesses can cause increases in appetite and weight loss. The blood work helps to rule in and rule out multiple diseases. Good luck and kisses to Tully Mars!
