My dog is scratching and licking. What causes matted fur and how to prevent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 6 years and 8 months old | 15 lbs

My dog Mylo, a 6 year old male Shitztu Poodle mix, has been scratching and licking the same spot for a week. I looked and no fleas or rashes. I did find these minescule mattes of fur by his private parts. I cut them out, carefully of course, but I’m still wanting to know any idea of what that could’ve been; and how I could prevent it from happening again. He’s been neutered, and goes every other month to the groomers. This is not an emergency case, but I’d still like to know what happenedThanks!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not possible to know what is going on just based on pictures of what you remove. Mylo may be scratching due to allergies, an infection, mange, ringworm, among other possibilities. I recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
