When can my cat safely return to my room after tapeworm treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 lbs

I gave my cat 1.5 pills of 20mg praziquantel and 230 mg pyrantel for the treatment of tapeworms. I know you have to treat the fleas; that's not what this is about. I want to know how long before I can let my baby back into my room without being afraid of him dropping tapeworm segments on furniture (sticks to his fur on the hind quarters). I feel awful about denying him our room, but my husband insists.

The Praziquantel should kill the tapeworm within a few hours. The tapeworm will be eliminated with all its segments (proglottids) with the feces. I would think this happens within 2 days at the longest.
