Pet's info: Dog | Shetland Sheepdog | Male | 1 year old | 10 lbs
I’m rescuing a dog that’s a 1 year old sheltie. He looks to be a mini. I’m told he’s 8-10 lbs. he has a grade 4 heart murmur. How is this treated? Is it expensive to buy the medicine? What tests are needed past the vet telling you they have a murmur? Do you need an expensive test to confirm, or do they treat based on that? Wondering how long we’ll be lucky to have him for.. does it change their life expectancy? Thanks so much. Any info is very helpful!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! A grade 4 heart murmur is loud for such a young dog. He should have a chest X-ray, heart worm test and an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) with a cardiologist to diagnosis what is causing the heart murmur. Then you can be provided a prognosis and treatment plan. These tests can be expensive. X-rays cost over $100 and the echocardiogram costs around $4-500. Medications cost depends on what his diagnosis is as does life expectancy. I would see if the rescue can get these done for you prior to adoption. Good luck!
