Is it cruel to fly my shy cat internationally or should I rehome him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 lbs

I’m planning to move from the USA to the UK for 1 year, then I’m looking to settle in Taiwan. This international travel is due to my job and wasn’t planned before I got my beloved indoor 1 year old cats. The male cat is particularly attached to me, he’ll jump into my arms for cuddles at any opportunity but is naturally shy and won’t let anyone else near him. Is it cruel to subject my cats to a few long haul flights and changes in environment or should I rehome them?

It's not cruel when done correctly. I would recommend working with your vet or a pet relocation service to find the best way to help your kitties adapt to being in a crate with a lot of noise for long periods of time. There will also be various health requirements you will need to meet to get an international health certificate, so it is best to start early.
