My dog has heart/kidney failure, lethargic after fluids. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 11.9 lbs

Hi, my dog has heart problems but is recently diagnosed with kidney failure. Today she went to the vet to receive a fluid therapy. But after she is back from the vet, she can’t seem to move at all. And just sleeps throughout. Her breathing rate is currently 60 per minute. Kindly advice

I would recommend that you have Nica evaluated by a vet as soon as possible. A respiratory rate of 60/minute is much higher than normal. Some dogs with heart issues don't tolerate extra fluids. It is a constant battle for us to manage dogs with both heart and kidney disease. Nica may need x-rays to see if there is fluid in her lungs or oxygen therapy if she isn't oxygenating well.
