Kitten has watery, slimy eye discharge. Should I go to the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | 3 lbs

My +/- 6 week old cat has a bit of a discharge from the eye, he was found with what looked like dirt around the eye. His eyes seemed very watery and after inspection i noticed there is slimy blobs on her eye. Should i try rinse it out using saline or should i take her to the vet. Picked her up 1 day ago so do not know if its recent?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lyssa! I would have her seen. It is likely a viral conjunctivitis but we want to prevent secondary bacterial infections. The vet will examine the eyes and check for a scratch. They then will prescribe an eye and cat safe antibiotic ointment to apply. It is also good to have her dewormed and discuss her vaccination protocol with the vet. Good luck!
