My dog's skin is irritated, itching, and dragging bottom after ticks.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 8 months and 7 days old | 7 lbs

I recently discovered my dog had ticks because I noticed hair loss-so that same day I washed him with hartz and put on a tick killing oil-but his skin still looks irritated/like it’s bleeding kind of-he’s itching sometimes -and he dragged his bottom on the floor- what’s wrong with him?

Hello. It is very important to consistently use a good flea & tick product on your pet on a very regular basis because it may be that he has developed an allergy/sensitivity/infection to all the bites. Dragging his bottom could be an indication of impacted/infected anal glands, or the presence of intestinal parasites, especially tapeworms. It sounds like Stitch would benefit form a visit to his vet for a good evaluation of his skin & bottom. He may need the help of medications to clear up all of his problems & make him a lot more comfortable. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
