My dog cries when alone. Will neutering help his separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Male | neutered | 11 months and 7 days old | 25 lbs

I believe Dodger has separation anxiety, we literally cannot leave him alone without him crying and howling. We’ve tried different things to help him while being alone, but nothing is working. My wife and I are about to move to an apartment and do not want to get complaints about his crying and barking. Is there anything we can try? We have tried leaving him with the tv on and also leave him with our cat as company. He is getting neutered next week, will this possibly help? Thank you!

Hello. Neutering may help, but this is a very good time to discuss Dodgers behavior with your vet. She will conduct a through examination of all his body systems & probably recommend bloodwork to rule out any underlying problems. Behavior problems can be addressed with modifying the environment, increased exercise & interactions with the family, training & finally the use of pharmaceuticals. You might want to request a consultation with a board certified veterinary behavior specialist as these things can take time. You are, after all, trying to change a behavior that has been there for quite a while. If your vet does not know of a specialist try here: https://www.avsabonline.org/. Hope Dodger improves soon.
