What should I do about yellow discharge from my 8-week-old puppy?

My 8 week old puppy has some yellow discharge.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Some discharge from the penis can be normal. I would use a mild soap and water to clean the area 2-3 times per day. When you have him in for his next vaccinations with your Vet have them look to make sure it isn't a bigger deal requiring antibiotics and prepuce flushing. Good luck!

A little bit of discharge can be normal but if he has pimple like lesions then he could have a bacterial infection (puppy impetigo). You could bathe him with a medicated puppy shampoo and see if that helps, but he may need an antibiotic to treat the infection. Your vet can prescribe an appropriate antibiotic, if needed.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! The elevated sodium likely has nothing to do with the discharge. The increased sodium while he was sick was likely due to dehydration. It is normal to have a small amount of discharge from the penis in male dogs. Excessive amounts that cause licking or urinary signs is NOT normal and can indicate a prepuce infection or a urinary tract infection. Use mild soap and water to wash the discharge away and see if you can retract the prepuce to see if there is a lot of discharge on his penis. If you see his penis coated in the the discharge that is too much and he should see your Vet. If you do not see any or very little he is likely fine. Good luck!

Hello. Xavier has Balanoposthitis, an inflammation of the glans penis & prepuce with excessive preputual discharge. Mild cases are generally clinically insignificant, but if severe, treatment may be needed. Have Xavier evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure there are no lesions on the penis. A mild saline flush may be all that is needed, but it is good to just check things out just to make sure all is OK. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Without seeing Harvey it is hard to say for sure what is going on. There is a normal yellow/green mucoid discharge (called smegma) that male dogs have to coat the penis inside the prepuce. There could also be an infection, like a bladder infection, but typically they have signs of increased thirst, frequent urination, and producing small amounts of urine at a time. To be sure, I recommend taking him to a vet for an exam and they can check the urine. If he isn't showing the other signs, I am suspicious this is the normal discharge male dogs have. This much discharge is not normal. A little is, but not as much as you describe. Especially if this is a new problem I would be a bit worried. Did your vet actually check inside the prepuce (the sheath covering the penis) and/or flush it? There could be a piece of grass or something in there that is causing the discharge. You will need to allow your vet to do a very thorough exam of the prepuce and maybe do some testing to get this figured out. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! What you are seeing is likely mucous. It could be a urinary tract infection of puppy vaginitis. They tend to grow out of puppy vaginitis. Sometimes they need antibiotics if they are urinating small amounts frequently. I would set up an appointment with your Vet for an exam. I would try to collect a urine sample for the appointment. First wipe the vulva with a baby wipe or a slightly soapy towel (rinse) before collecting. I hope this helps!

My 2 year old black lab has discharge appearing at the tip of his penis/sheath. Eating & playing is great, no trouble urinating. Can I attempt to clear this up myself with home remedy? Will have to try and get a photo when it appears on the sheath.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! You may be referring to smegma which does not need to be treated necessarily. If that is the case, it should just be a tiny amount at the tip. If it is more than that or just dripping it may be an infection in which case a visit to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment would be indicated. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Are you sure that the bed isn't wet form him licking his penis? If he has an infection of his prepuce or penis he may lick a lot. This is normal. As long as he’s urinating normally, acting normal, eating and drinking, no vomiting or diarrhea, there is no reason for concern. The amount will increase some as he gets older, then decrease following surgery to neuter him. Thanks for asking Boop by Petco!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! If it is the brown stuff I am seeing in the picture, it could be a small yeast infection (that is consistent with the smell you describe as well). Trim the hairs around the penis and then I would just try 25% white vinegar 75% water solution on a cloth and gently clean twice daily. If the discharge is white/creamy, yellow tinged, or even a bit crusty, that can be normal - especially for an in tact male dog. If there is problems urinating, blood in the urine or blood in the discharge, or very large amounts of the discharge, then I am more concerned. Unfortunately we are not legally allowed to recommend specific drugs/doses without a physical exam (also I have no idea what's available near you), so you'd have to call or visit the vet in that instance.
