My dog is vomiting after surgery. What's the best test for a blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

After my seven year old female rat terrier underwent surgery for a full hysterectomy due to an infection of the uterus, she vomited a large vomit of hair, blankets, grass, and some food. She had been doing a lot of licking from what I felt was nausea. So I took her back to the her veterinarian and he did an x-ray and feels there may be a blockage. He wants to do an upper GI and ultrasound. What would be the best test to get a diagnosis? I've already spent $1,700.

I recommend doing a GI contrast series of X-rays first. That will show if there is a blockage from her eating something that is stuck in the intestines. The ultrasound for this is not as helpful in my opinion and shouldn’t be necessary unless there is no blockage and they want to check her abdomen and other organs. This is a serious problem so please get the contrast study done soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for your dog.
