Can my dog with kidney disease eat egg or tuna as an occasional treat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bichon Frise | Male | unneutered | 13 years and 6 months old | 23 lbs

My dog has protein in his urine. Is it okay to give him an egg or tuna occasionally. He is currently on Hills prescription diet for kidney's.

As an occasional treat, (not more than twice a week), its extremely unlikely to cause significant harm. However, I would avoid using egg/tuna/chicken/hotdogs/lunchmeat to give daily medication or as a frequent or daily treat. Thanks for asking Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

I am sorry to hear about Punky! I would recommend consulting with Punky's veterinarian on whether or not they feel small amounts of egg or tuna will be safe for him, as we do not have his lab work/know the history of his kidney disease and proteinuria. It is best to consult with them on any dietary changes since they know his current health in detail.
