Bent dew claw, no pain, stopped bleeding. Does my dog need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog has bent and ripped her dew claw but is still attached from where it grows out of the leg, it seems to have turned about 45 degrees, it was bleeding for a few minutes but has stoppe and hasn't started again, she doesn't seem in any pain, ate her tea happily and is now asleep, do I need to take to the vets or just keep my eye on her

There are two choices: 1) take your dog to the vet and have the ripped claw removed. 2) Observe and it may heal, but it also may get infected and then you would need to take your dog to the vet to have the claw removed.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It isn't an emergency but she should be seen to have the broken nail cut back. It will be a constant source of discomfort and once she relaxes she will likely start licking it. Have a good day!

If it is not bleeding it probably doesn’t require any additional treatment. Parker may need to wear an e-collar if he is licking the nail. Infection is fairly rare but if the nail base starts to look red or swollen or if there is discharge you should have him examined by your vet.

It depends on how the dewclaw was injured. If it was completely torn it should heal as long as Crystal is not licking the nail which could lead to an infection. If it split in half or is partially torn it may continue to be painful until it is partially removed. If she still seems painful or if you see any more bleeding it would be a good idea to see a veterinarian. You may also want to use an e-collar to prevent her from licking in the meantime.
