My dog has hot spots. Is powder safe for itching and moisture?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 71.2 lbs

I have 2 GSDs that have created hot spots on themselves. I was wondering if it is safe to use powder on dogs to keep their skin dry, or if it isnt what is safe to use to keep the moisture and itch minimal Ive heard some people use baby powder, and other people use that goldbond foot powder for athletes foot.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While some people may use these powders, this really should not be necessary if they are being treated appropriately with antibiotic therapy. I would recommend to actually leave them uncovered. Otherwise, these are ideally evaluated by a veterinarian who can examine her to determine the extent of these and proceed accordingly with therapy. If these are being caused by allergies for example, it is crucial to treat the allergies. Good luck and have a great day!
