My dog's neuter incision hurts after 4 days. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 8 months and 30 days old | 78 lbs

I have a male GSD who is post op day 4 from being neutered.. he still doesn’t like it when I touch the incision site. Looks to be healing normal and is starting to scab... is it normal for him to still experience pain? Or should I be worried.

Hello. Yes, this area can be sensitive for 1-2 weeks. Even though the skin incision is healing, deeper tissue was also traumatized during the surgery. Continue to monitor the area for redness, heat, swelling or discharge. It takes 7-10 days minimum for a surgery site to heal....but it can be tender for longer.
