My dog is limping and licking his paw. What to do for his pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

My dog started limping and licking his paw yesterday, I can’t really tell if it’s a growth or if something may be stuck in his paw by looking at it. What can I do to make it less painful for him in the meantime?

I would recommend an Elizabethan collar so Dexter doesn’t lick at his paw. I would also recommend resting him and bringing him to a veterinarian. He most likely will need pain meds and antibiotics. There is not truly safe pain medication over the counter for dogs. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
