Why does my dog have diarrhea & skin spots during food change?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 10 years and 11 months old | 52 lbs

My dog has bad allergies, 11 yr. old boxer. I transitioned her to grain free but it didn't help. I have been transitioning her back to her old food but she has diarrhea alot, I gave her boiled chicken/rice dinner last night and she was great until this morning. I also noticed these 3 spots on her left back upper leg, not anywhere else. This is day 5 of transitioning back. Is it normal to have such diarrhea? She is at approx. 65% grain free in the transition stage.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Allergies don’t typically develop that late in life. Also, dogs don’t have grain allergies, they have allergies to the protein source in the food. So if she had a problem with chicken, you could try a beef or fish formula. However, those areas on her skin and the diarrhea don’t make me think allergy. I would take her to a vet for an exam to rule out other skin problems, like an infection, and discuss the diarrhea. Diarrhea from diet changes doesn’t usually last that long. They may want to check her stool for microscopic parasites, or check blood work for internal organ changes. Good luck and kisses to Ethel!
