Puppy car sick, not eating. Motion sickness or anxiety? When to worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 6 days old

Our new puppy Yorkie came home yesterday! He drilled a bit in the car but seemed chilled. Today we took him in the car on errands and he got sick & drooled quite a bit as well. Since we’ve been home he hasn’t wanted to eat but he has had water. I have 2 questions: 1) if hes not wanting to eat after being sick - how long before we should be concerned? 2) how do we tell if it was motion sickness or anxiety? Thank you so much!

How long has it been since LIttle Boy ate? If it has been 2 hours, I would wait another 2-3 hours. If it has been 12 hours then he needs to see a veterinarian. Puppies glucose can drop drastically if they do not eat and they can have lethargy and seizures. I would try some wet puppy food. I also wouldn't take him in the car for 2 weeks to give him time to adjust to his new surroundings. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
