My dog yelps when picked up. Is it neck, back, or chest pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 23 lbs

Nothing looks wrong with my dog but lately when I've gone to pick her up, normal pressure on her chest has caused her to yelp. Nothing has changed in diet, and activity hasn't changed much either with the exception that she seems to prefer laying down more than sitting (to the point of disobedience) also she's been hanging her head, I thought it was air quality with the smoke/dust here but could that be related? I'm going to take her to the vet regardless but I want to know if it's urgent.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Lily isn’t feeling well. It sounds like there may be some pain in her neck or back. If there is a pinched nerve in the neck, it will radiate through the whole body and cause discomfort when picking up. I wouldn’t consider it “urgent” but it does sound like she may be in pain and need some medications to help relieve her pain. Please do not give any over the counter medications as they are not safe for pets. Good luck and kisses to Lily!
