My dog was neutered for a swollen testicle. Should his scrotum be removed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 6 months old | 26 lbs

Hi, I've just had my dog Buster neutered due to a very swollen testicle, about 3 times the size of its usual size. I would like to know what is the best procedure for his condition, to remove balls but leaving the scrotum sack or complete abolition of the scrotum. Thanks you, Emily

Scrotal ablation is an elegant way or leaving no extra skin dangling. That way the scrotum also cannot fill with blood or serum which causes prolonged healing. If your dog is already neutered, removing the scrotum now would be an extra surgery. If your vet has removed the scrotum when neutering your dog, it was likely the best decision as healing will be sped up.
