My CKD cat is declining. When should I consider euthanasia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | British Shorthair | Female | spayed | 13 years and 3 months old | 8.3 lbs

Hi, my ckd cat has started faeces incontinence in last 10days (initially soft stool, more recently dark/hard/small), she is withdrawn & her appetite has dropped. She’s losing weight steadily. Her recent decline is post a vet visit on Friday :( for a heart scan (ok). My vet is proposing more tests & didn’t even mention ckd progressing. On relfection, I’m wondering if I should consider euthanasia as she isn’t the happy cat she was & don’t want her suffering. What are your thoughts pls?

If you feel Ella’s quality of life has declined and your veterinarian does not think this is a temporary setback it may be time. Fecal incontinence is concerning - in my opinion the ability to urinate and defecate in the right place is a part of a pet’s dignity and incontinence can affect quality of life. The decrease in appetite and weight loss may be progressive. You may want to schedule a consultation with your vet to discuss everything in more detail. This is such a difficult decision to make, but ultimately you will do what’s best for Ella.
