My indoor cat left black specks on my sheets. Are they fleas?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 6 months old | 9 lbs

Hi, I washed my sheets last night and when I woke up this morning noticed that my cat left some kind of residue all over the sheets. I don't think she has flees since she's an inside pet. What could it be?

I am concerned about fleas. Even indoor cats can get fleas and I would recommend putting her on a flea prevention. If you run your hands against the fur at the base of her tail and she has little black specks then it is definitely fleas. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi there. Yes, it's definitely possible to have fleas without any other obvious skin problems - even in indoor cats. If you're seeing black specks in Benji's fur, I would recommend starting him and your other cats on a good quality flea medication like Revolution or Advantage Multi, to get rid of any fleas they may currently have and prevent them from getting more. It's best to do this right away as soon as you notice a problem, to avoid getting fleas established in your house as this will make them much more difficult to get rid of.
