Is my 5-month-old kitten eating too much wet food or just growing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 27 days old | 4 lbs

I am concerned my kitten is eating too much. Griffin is almost 5 months old. He will eat 2 (3oz) cans of Fancy Feast kitten wet food, 4 times a day. That is 8 cans per day! He is a little less than 5 lbs, energetic, and has a very shiny, smooth coat. He poops after every meal, and his feces are well formed and brown. He also urinates a lot. He has been treated for hookworm/roundworm. I have not seen any tapeworms in his poop. Should I have a vet do a fecal test? Or is he just hungry and growing?

He is just hungry and growing, but 8 cans (24 oz of food is way too much. Try to slowly reduce this to a maximum of 6-8 oz/day over 3 feeds. He will pester you for food, but you have to plow through that.

This does seem like a lot of food for Griffin. He may have a big appetite and some kittens do need more calories than others. You may want to have your vet examine Griffin and help determine if his body condition seems ideal - if he is overweight you may need to cut back on the food offered but if his weight is ideal or if he is underweight you can probably keep feeding him the same amount. If he hasn’t seen the vet and had a fecal analysis to test for intestinal parasites it might also be a good idea to check for them.
