My 6-month Akita puppy is underweight. Can quality food help him grow?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Akita | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 15 days old | 25 lbs

I have a 5, almost 6mo old Akita That I acquired 4 days ago. I suspect that the breeder did not feed him enough or maybe a substandard food as he is only 25 pounds. At this point (age) will a quality food give him the mass and length of bone for the breed "standard"?

Since dogs grow until they are approximately 18 months old, a top quality food will certainly increase his chances or reaching breed standard sizes, provided there was not too much damage done by the low quality food he was fed before. It is also very important that you take Yoshi to a veterinarian for a thorough exam to make sure he is healthy. I hope all goes well!
