Why is my 3-month-old puppy not gaining weight even though she eats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 27 days old | 50 lbs

My puppy is about 3 months old. I got her from a man who worked with my husband. He knows I'm an animal person & pitbull lover. & so he showed my husband picture of her and her parents. Her parents didn't look very healthy in the pictures so I told my husband bring her home. Id wanted another dog anyways. So now I can't seem to get her to gain weight. She eats 3 cups of dog food a day. Gets plenty of water and exercise and love and play time. What do I do?

You should have Zena examined by your veterinarian to make sure she is healthy. At the same time you can get her wormed (worms could be a reason for not gaining weight), and vaccinated. You say her dam and sire did not look healthy....there could be a congenital problem that could keep her from gaining weight. Feed her a good quality complete puppy food for medium to large dogs and feed her according to the instructions on the bag.
