Moving a large dog with hip pain: How to ensure comfort and safe loading?

we have to move fri. montana to Virginia and our 6 year old GS hip has gotten hurt and he in a lot of pain he has Hip Dis. we were waiting for something like this to take him in for surgery. My ? is can we make him comfortable enough to make trip with meds? How can we load unload him ? any ideas? I can pick him up even if goes 110 really don't know what to do! Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 16 years and 7 months old | 110 lbs
