My 10lb dog ate Reese's Cups. Is chocolate poisoning a risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Pinscher | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 10 lbs

My dog ate 6 reeses cups, he is 10 lbs and I know it’s mostly peanut butter but I can’t induce vomiting and I am very scared even though he is acting fine. I would guess it’s 1.5 ounces of chocolate overall.

What a scary experience! I totally understand being concerned. The chocolate in reeses cups is mostly sugar and milk, so even eating 6 and even being so small, Elliott should be ok. It's still a good idea to keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, and shaking/tremors. If you see any of those signs, I'd recommend going to a vet for supportive care.

The potential risk for [chocolate toxicity](https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-things-you-should-know-about-chocolate-poisoning) would depend on the weight of your dog. If your dog's weight is more than 15 lbs the risk of toxicity will be none or very low. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, hyperactivity, rapid breathing or ataxia (wobbly gait) in the next 8-12 hours. If you notice any of these signs, I would recommend to take her to your veterinarian or the nearest veterinary ER for an exam and appropriate treatment. Either may induce vomiting via injection to get the [chocolate](https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/chocolate) out. Activated charcoal may be administered afterwards to further reduce absorption. The [peanut butter](https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/peanut-butter) should cause no harmful effects. If you want to discuss this problem any further please do not hesitate to request a consultation.

One Reese's peanut butter cup contains only a very small amount of milk chocolate, which is the least dangerous type - this should not be enough chocolate to cause any toxicity issues, even in a small dog like Precious. She may have a mild upset stomach if she isn't used to eating human food like this, but otherwise i would not expect to see any serious problems.

Your dog could eat up to 8 Reese's peanut butter cups before getting poisoned by chocolate. So there is no worry about a bite. However watch for diarrhea and a tummy ache as the peanutbutter could cause gastrointestinal problems in some dogs.
