My dog has a hard lump on her chest. Is it a tumor or infection?

Unfortunately, even in person I would be hard pressed to give you a diagnosis based only on appearance. When a client comes in with a pet that has an unknown mass, we typically consider the following as possibilities, taking many factors into account: a mass/tumor, an abscess, a cystic structure, an insect bite, an allergic reaction, or a bruise from trauma. If the structure has burst open, it is most likely not allergic or from an insect. Depending upon your dog's age, the time the lump has existed, the consistency of the fluid you have noted, and the presence / absence of any other clinical signs, one of the other options is most likely. Something the vet might be able to do is obtain some cellular material from the affected area, place it under a microscope, and see if there is any cellular material that is useful in obtaining a diagnosis. This lump should be checked out by a veterinarian. I suspect it is some type of tumor, or it could be an abscess or infection (though less likely as she's not painful). A tumor could be benign, meaning that it doesn't need treatment at all, or that surgical removal alone would cure the problem, or it could be malignant, meaning that surgical removal alone may not solve the issue. Take her to the vet. Your vet will likely do a "fine needle aspirate" which is when we poke a skin lump with a needle to get a sample of the cells, then squirt those cells out onto a microscope to look at it. The photo isn't very clear, and it can be hard to diagnose something without atually seeing and feeling it. Possibilities include bacterial infection, ringworm, itching from fleas, mites, cancer, among other things. If it is continuing to get bigger, I recommend that Princess see a vet to determine the cause and receive appropriate treatment. Your vet may want to test for bacteria or fungus, do a skin scrape to check for mites, or a cytology to look at a small sample of cells under the microscope.

This is a tumor/growth. If it has changed rapidly in size, it may be starting to have a pocket of fluid inside. I cannot tell you if this growth is benign or malignant by looking at it. Your veterinarian can perform a needle aspirate to obtain a sample of cells to look at which may help you to determine the likelihood of a malignancy. Whether this is benign or malignant, it may be something you would want to have surgically removed. Even benign growths that continue to grow can be problematic...they can become infected or bleed. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. Any lump or mass is a possible cause for concern. Masses/lumps can be cancerous, or non-cancerous (lipoma, cyst, abscess). Anything that is changing (growing, changing colour/shape, bursting, etc.) should be addressed and the sooner the better. I would recommend a visit to your vet. Hello. This is probably a benign neoplasia called a lipoma, but any lump, bump or nodule that pops up, especially on an older dog, should be brought to your veterinarians attention as quickly as possible. Sometimes we will do a very simple needle aspirate to look for any unusual cells under the microscope, or your veterinarian may just elect to watch things. But it should at least be evaluated. Hello and thank you for your question. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. Skin masses can be many things but red/pink raised masses are especially concerning for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell tumor. This cancer can spread to the internal organs. Your veterinarian will need to collect a sample of cell to examine under the microscope to determine what this is and if further treatment is needed. Have this checked out soon. Fingers crossed this is not a MCT and is something benign instead but you can't tell by looks. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach. Due to the rapid increase in size, I would get this lump checked out by your veterinarian. They can perform a simple test by inserting a needle into the lump to see what the contents are. This may be a cyst / abscess / tumor (benign or malignant) and it should have more testing done to try and determine what it is and what the right course of treatment should be.
