My pregnant dog has bloody discharge. Is it pyometra or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Have you ever experienced pyometra and pregnancy in a dog at the same time? We had our female bred the middle of August with successful ties. About a week later we noticed some bloody discharge, but not a whole lot. She has been into the vet numerous times and we have done CBC's (19000-43000) each time as well as ultrasounds (latest confirming 6-8 pups). No enlarged uterine horns and the discharge has stopped. Is there anything else you think it could be? She's been on cephalexen and baytril.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. She could have had a vaginal as opposed to a uterine infection causing the discharge you observed. I would discuss the use of Baytril with your veterinarian if you have not done so already. It is known to cause cartilage deformities so is generally not indicated during pregnancy or with young growing puppies. Hopefully this was already explained to you though. It may have been thought the infection was severe enough that it was worth these risks. I hope this information helps!
