My Shih Tzu's nipple has a cut and isn't healing. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old | 16 lbs

two weeks ago I noticed a cut on my 3 year old shih tzus nipple. We live on an acre and she thinks she's a lab so I thought she scraped it. Today I was running her tummy and noticed it still there and no better /possibly a little worse. She is fixed - but we didn't fix her until she was just after 2....she is part of the family and now I'm really worrying. I know our vet won't be able to get us in for a week or so. What are the possibilities?

Hi ! From the attached pictures it looks like the nipple has turned inwards and as a result there is a bit of infection in the skin surrounding the nipple. You can bathe the area with some salty water, using some cotton wool to clean it. Make a mug of hot water, add a teaspoon of salt and then some cold water to make it lukewarm. Wipe the area gently. You can do this twice a day, using a clean cloth to dry the area afterwards by gently tapping it. I would book a vet check up anyway, as it is important also to feel the area to make sure no other abnormalities are present. Hope this helps !
