New rescue dog biting when putting on harness. Is he in pain?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | 18 years and 8 months old | 14 lbs

I have had a rescue dog, Shih Tzu mix, approx 8 years old for one month. Over the past few days, he has been very unfriendly, nipping and even bruising someone while they try to put on his harness for a walk. I’m on a business trip, and have friends staying and taking care of home. What would you recommend d? Thanks. Cara

If this is a new behavior then I would bring Andy to a veterinarian to have him evaluated. I would be concerned there is something medical going on with him which in turn is making him bite. If everything medically is ok then there are trainers that should be able to help and there is medication your veterinarian can try.
