My kitten's blocked tear duct won't clear. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 months and 22 days old | 8 lbs

Our 10 month old kitten (Lila) has been diagnosed with a blocked tear duct. She was put on a steroid eye gel and we were told to do warm compresses three times a day. But these methods don’t seem to be helping. Is there anything else you would recommend to help Lila?

The only other way to unblock the tear duct is to flush it, which is quite difficult as it is very small. This is an option when the ointment and the warm compresses do not work. You may have to do this regimen for a longer period of time before you see any change, however discuss the option of a tear duct flush with your veterinarian.
