My dog keeps looking at his butt. Is it anal glands or constipation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | 6 years and 2 months old | 15 lbs

Hello I have a six yo jack Russell Terrier. He isn't neutered. He does the same as I've already read on here by looking quickly at his butt like something bit him. I don't see anything in his stool, but he also hasn't gotten a full check-up with a vet since he was given to me in July 2018. Please advise. Thank you. Marie a Smith

Your dog could be looking back at his behind because there is something there causing him pain. Milo could have an anal gland impaction or rupture causing him pain, he could be very constipated, or he could have painful gas. I recommend taking him into the vet in the morning to diagnose why is causing him to act this way, and to receive the correct treatment for it. If his anal sacs are impacted, he will need them expressed. If they have abscessed or ruptured, the area will need to be cleaned and he will need antibiotics. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely due to the anal sacs being full or an infection or inflammation. For this reason, I recommend that you have Royce evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check the anal sacs and drain them or treat with antibiotics if needed. Good luck and have a great day!
