Why does my dog stop walking on leash when dogs bark or in new places?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 3 years and 11 months old | 65 lbs

My dog won't walk in his leash when he noticed that he didn't know the place. He also suddenly stopped walking each time dogs were barking at him, even the dogs were just inside the gates. Please help me.

I recommend a group obedience training class so he will learn to listen to you with other people and dogs around. In the meantime find a friend with an older confident dog that walks well on the leash and plan your dog walks together. That way your dog will learn from the other dog and not be as anxious. Please reward him when he relaxes and goes forward. I would also start with short walks where there are minimal distractions. I would suggest enrolling him in a beginner obedience class right away. There, he can learn to walk calmly on a leash in the controlled presence of other dogs and people. He may have had some disturbing incidents when he was living on the streets that make him anxious when he go out.
