My dog ate a bully bone and has bloody diarrhea. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | 23 lbs

My dog ate a bully bone yesterday and seemed fine. Took him out today and he had diarrhea and it looked like blood mixed. Kinda dark but also red. He has eaten and he was just playing ball. Not acting out of the ordinary.

It could be that the bully bone upset Tornado’s stomach leading to the diarrhea with blood in it. Given he’s otherwise acting normal, I can give you a home remedy for him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts a couple of times a day for several days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet diet. If the diarrhea continues in the absence of food, he has diarrhea on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces, he stops eating, starts vomiting, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, and/or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps.
