Why is my Great Pyrenees panting, bleeding, not eating after heat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Pyrenees | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 100 lbs

I have a 9 yr old female Great Pyrenees. She was in heat a month or so ago. She is now panting, bleeding from her vulva, not eating, nose is warm/dry, & laying around x 3 days. She's never had a litter of puppies. She doesn't appear to have bagged up or have an enlarged abdomen. I'm not certain if she's in labor, miscarrying, or if there's something else going on. She's up to date on vaccinations & our vet is closed today. I have antibiotics if need be and can administer if necessary. Thank you

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Bleeding from her vulva could be due to something else like a urinary tract infection for instance but that really depends on what it looks like so it is hard to know without an examination. I think this is less likely miscarriage or anything like that and is more likely to be unrelated to that. I recommend that you have Duchess evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a great day! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
