Can male and female bettas live together peacefully in a tank?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Unknown - Fish | Male | unneutered | 0 lbs

Hello I was wondering if I could keep my female and male Bettas together in a tank. They are in a 1 gallon tank together with a divider but if I can remove the divider they would have more room. (And maybe be friends?) My female is a little skittish of new things at first and the male has been calm and curious about her through the holes in the divider. He’s only flared up one time when I approached the tank in the dark but was fine once I turned the light on.

You can keep a male and a female betta together for a short time for breeding purposesm however if you intend to keep them together for longer they will eventually start to fight. So it is not ga good idea to put them in the same space.
