My turtle has white spots on its shell. Is it an infection or tank?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My turtle has recently formed what looks to be faded white spots. I have a basking spot, a light, a water filter, and a 10 gallon tank. I like to make sure my turtle has what he needs so please let me know if he has any type of infection or something wrong with him.

A 10 gallon tank is small for a turtle of that size. Ideally, you want to provide 10 gallons per inch of turtle. It is possible the marks are abrasions from rubbing on tank furniture. You can scrub the shell gently with a soft bristled toothbrush and diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Allow for a 1-2 hour dry dock (keep Sleepy out of water) after each cleaning. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, discharge or spread. If there is no improvement, you may need to have an exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. Sleepy appears to be a species of slider. You can review slider care at the link below. The care of most sliders is very similar regardless of species. http://www.anapsid.org/reslider.html
