Is it okay my vet cut & crushed my cat's Clavamox pills for storage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My cat is on amoxicillin trihydrate clavulanate. I didn’t have a pill cutter so the vets office cut all two weeks worth of pills in half ( she needs a lesser dose) and put them in a green bottle to keep in cupboard away from light. Said I could crush them and put in food. I thought these pills had to be kept in their foil until used and weren’t supposed to be crushed or stored out of their foil because it ruins its effectiveness. What do you think? Think pills will be ok with what the office did

Yes, long term storage out of the foil would be a problem but for the short course of treatment they should be fine. They now have clavamox in chewable tablets that are easy to break and most pets love the taste.
