My dog's penis infected after surgery. Is removal helpful to save him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 7 months old

My dog, Jerry, had his surgery a few days ago in which some stones were removed from his kidney. After the process of catheterisation, he got his penis infected. The penis has turned deep red and it’s bleeding everytime he urinates. The doctor told us that he would have to remove the infected part or else it would become fatal. I wanted to know whether removing the part would be helpful?

Infections left untreated can and are fatal, so if your vet is recommending removal of the infected part, I would have that done. It would be helpful in that it could keep Jerry from dying now. Best of luck.
