Why does my senior Great Dane's hind end suddenly smell so bad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | neutered | 8 years and 11 months old | 130 lbs

My almost 9 year old Great Dane has started to stink. At first we thought it was his breath, now we think it might be his hind quarters. He gives off this stench that is horrible. It's so bad, our couch completely reeks. I'm wondering what might be causing it.

It could be that Big Ben has impacted anal sacs, which would lead to his rear end stinking badly. It could also be that he has a skin infection causing the smell. I would have him seen by a vet tomorrow. The vet can diagnose the cause of his smell, and can treat him for it. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
