Winter White hamster had one baby. Why did it die? When can she breed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Female | unspayed

my winter white hamster just had a baby. is it normal to only have one baby? we left her alone but we are somewhat sure she only had one. mom i believe was born in feb and dad was born in march.. after mom had the baby we left her alone, only checked on her for food and water. they were doing fine it seemed but then we checked on the 6th day and the baby was dead. i removed it from the cage and cleaned it but we are curious as to why it died? also when can we get her pregnant again?

Winter White hamsters have an average of 3-9 pups (baby hamsters). They can have as few as 1 or as many as 14. The pup may have died due to illness or lack of care, especially if this was the first breeding. The female will go into heat again almost immediately after delivery. Gestation is about 3 weeks.
