My dog has black ear gunk. Can I use wipes or drops before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 85 lbs

So I cleaned my labs ears on Monday with malacetic wet wipes and his ears were disgusting. Black almost coffee ground like gunk. So I checked again today (Wednesday) and they looked like they were never cleaned at all. I’m not a vet but I’m suspicious of ear mites. I’m not able to get an appointment until next week to see my vet but I was wondering in the mean time if the malacetic cleaning wipes & burrows/hydrocortisone ear drops would be ok for now. The drops are more for yeast I think tho?

You can keep cleaning Louie's ear with the wipes, but do not put the hydrocortisone ear drops in his ear. He needs his ear checked by a vet before any treatment is put into them. If his ear drum isn't intact, which can happen with ear infections, putting any drops in the ear can have very serious effects. Clean his ears daily, but do not put anything in them unless it has been specifically prescribed by his vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
