My cat hasn't eaten in 4 days. Should I wait for his vet appointment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

Does he need to go to the emergency vet or can he wait until his 11am vet appointment tomorrow? He was given fluids yesterday as well as an antibiotic injection. He hasn’t eaten in about 4 days but is still using the litter box. His appointment tomorrow is for an ultrasound.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think it would be ok to wait until tomorrow as long as he is otherwise doing well. Loss of appetite can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you keep your appointment to have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. I do agree that an abdominal ultrasound is the next best step. Treatment would be based on findings. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping for a speedy recovery!
