How to feed two dogs when one is picky and the other steals food?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 3.96 lbs

How can we set up our two dogs eating arrangement? Molly is a slow eater, meaning she kind of snacks on her food. She doesn’t eat her recommended portion. Belle on the other hand does and she’s been caught eating Molly’s adult gastrointestinal food. What do you recommend we do? We’ve separated them to eat but when belle is not around Molly still won’t eat. She prefers belle’s puppy food.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think the best way is to separate them. I would recommend you continue to keep them separate when it is time to eat. If you continue to feed Molly only her diet, eventually she will understand that that is all she will get and most likely will start eating it. You can add canned chicken or chicken broth to it for example to entice her appetite which may get her going faster. Good luck!
