My new foster cat is panting and scared. Is this a health issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | unspayed

I am fostering a cat that just got dropped off today. She was found living near a ranch as a stray. She's probably very nervous and scared. She looks to be around 9 months old. Normal weight. The only thing is she seems to be panting. I've bever seen a cat pant and don't know what it means. How should I make her transition into my house easier? What does the panting mean?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While panting and open mouth breathing can be due to nervousness to some extent, this most likely signals a respiratory condition such as asthma, heart disease, among many other possibilities. I highly recommend you consider taking Fluffy to your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They will likely recommend starting with an exam and chest radiographs. Hoping for the best! Good luck and have a great day!
